MIRA believes not just in the power of individuals to transform their own lives, but even more so in the ability of communities to work together to realize local development and sustainable livelihoods. By combining the right resources and knowledge with intentional grass roots ownership, MIRA works to empower communities to decide their own futures and create more choices for themselves and their children.
In order to help community in addressing their basic nutritional needs, MIRA’s hunger and livelihoods programs focus on improving the food supply, farming practices and finances of families in need. Under the programs:

  • We give families basic food staples following a natural disaster or emergency.
  • We teach parents about the importance of providing their child with the right variety of foods to prevent malnutrition.
  • We train small-scale farmers on how to prevent the loss of crops or livestock to drought, floods or disease.
  • We guide family farmers on how to grow more nutritious foods, in larger quantities to eat or to sell, and how to raise animals for meat, eggs or milk through Livestock management & kitchen gardening trainings
  • We help families’ access basic financial products like savings or insurance so they can persevere through challenging times, or start and expand their small businesses.
  • And, we give youth the skills to succeed — like building their savings, teaching them how to manage money, and get a job and/or build a business.

LIVESTOCK/VETERINARY SERVICES

Livestock is the mainstay of the desert economy where 80% of the populations rear cattle for their livelihood. Drought has triggered various viral diseases in the livestock that resulted deaths of considerable number of livestock in desert area of Umerkot and Tharparkar. Considering the severity of situation HRF with facilitation of MIRA arranged veterinary services camp on May 14, 2014 at village Punhoon-Ji- Dhani. The team led by Livestock specialist Dr. Aneel Kumar DVM M.Phil with livestock officer where around 300 small animals (sheep and goat) were vaccinated and also drenched the weak animal included goat and sheep. Local residents stated that, “The dearth of fodder has weakened the immune system of animals, rendering them very prone to the deadly viral disease, locally known as ‘Mata’ or sheep pox.” They further added that, “Major reason of deaths of livestock is low rain spell in last monsoon.” Furthermore, they informed that; “We have to travel 5 kilometers distance on daily basis from our village to water point for fetching the drinking water for animals and humans.
